Tom's story is about an unfortunate situation which he was unable to put right in the end. It shows how careful one should be about making accusations. You may think that Tom should be criticized for making a hasty decision and for not being prepared to reconsider it later. Or you may feel that the whole story was 'just one of those unfortunate things'. 'Quid' is a slang term for 'pound' or 'pounds'.
