Discussion
Hi, Alex. I am hopeful to have a fruitful chatting with you.
Hi, Vladimir! So am I. I believe habits, being fixed ways of thinking, feeling and doing something, strongly effect our lives. The good ones, such as reading or jogging, make us smartet and healthier. The bad ones, such as smoking, shorten our lives. What is your take on the subject?
I agree with you completely but I think that good habits are those ones that make not only the hobbyists smarter and healthier but also other people. What do you mean by my take on the subject?
(someone's) take on (something) - someone's perspective, opinion, or idea about something.
Well, some of them can cause a ripple effect on the people around us, but not all. Reading in the dark, I suppose, is not so harmful for others, but smoking definitely is. I have to confess, I tried smoking and drinking when I was a child and adolescent. But now I'm clean:-). However, I can't say I have a great number of good habits: reading, lerning english, maybe something else, but I have to think more. What about you?
Thank you for the reference.
I have a few good habits - among them are going in for sports, analysing my actions and mistakes, learning English.
What do you think about trolling as a good or bad habit?
I believe using communicative process for overt or covert bulling, humiliation, mocking other people is definitely a bad habit producing a negative ripple effect. Do you think it's a “treatable” habit, and one who has it is able to kick it?
I think that any habit is treatable, however, much depends on the person who wants to get rid of a bad habit.
By the way, what do you mean by kick it? Before you said that you used to smoke and drink but now you were “clean”, how did you get rid of smoking and drinking?
kick a/the habit is an idiom meaning to break a habit, to get rid of it
Actually, these ones weren't real strong habits of mine. When I tried smoking I didn't inhale the smoke just held it for a bit in the mouth and then blew it out. But one day I tried true smoking, and that was awful cause I felt suffocated. But on the other hand, that experience turned out to be a really good life lesson for me, so I've never tried smoking again. As to drinking, I did it just to fit in with my mates and stopped doing it when my family moved to another place.
I can often see books like “X Habits of Happy People”. Do you think there may be a fixed set of habits that can make everyone happy?
Thank you for your reference.
I think that if a person has acquired a habit at his liberty, then (s)he is happy. But if a person was made to acquire a habit by force, then (s)he is not happy. How important do you think age is for changing one's habits?
I think the age of a habit is more likely than the age of its “holder” to determine difficulties in its changing. As for happiness, do you think it might be a habit in some way?
If we start generalizing like this, then any behaviour is a habit, and then is it impossible to distinguish one habit from another, a bad habit from a good one. So we must draw a borderline between a habit and a non-habit. I do not think that happiness is a habit because happines is a state and a feeling. Do you?
I'm not talking about all kinds of behaviour, but only about fixed patterns. If happiness is a habitual state and a way of feeling, why can't we consider it as a sort of habit? And I don't see any problem in distinguishing habits in this case: happiness is a good habit, unhappiness is a bad one. Do you think there may be a good person with a set of bad habits and a bad person with a bunch of good ones?
I can't consider happiness a habit, bacause happiness is an emotion.
I think that habits do not make a person good or bad, like happiness cannot be a habit. Do you?
A drug habit, for example, can easily make a person bad and even criminal. As to happiness, I think since it can be a fixed way of feeling then it can be a habit, but let's agree to differ. What is the weirdest/oddest habit you have heard about?
The weirdest habit I have heard about is from Portugal - adding salt on a dish means there that you didn’t like the food. And what about you?
Talking back to the TV is a funny and weird habit to me. Do you have any habits you want to get rid of?
I had one and you know what habit it was and now I think I'd like to get rid of credulousility. And do you have any habits you want to get rid of?
Going to bed late is the one. Late night is the most peaceful time of the day to me. I think there is some anxiety lies behind it. So, at first I need to handle with my anxiety. Do you see the steps you need to follow to become less credulous?
I think that at first I need to study people - especially the worst of them. What steps do you follow to get rid of going to bed late?
I should try to find peace within myself instead of looking for it in the outer world. I wish you good luck in studying people and getting rid of credulity. See you next time!
