They came near. = Они приблизились
They nearly came. = Они едва не пришли

He watched them closely. = Он наблюдал за ними (собаками не сходя с места) внимательно
He watched them close. = Он наблюдал за ними вблизи

He resembles his father very closely. = Он напоминает своего отца очень сильно
She cut my hair close. = Она постригла меня коротко

We'll come short. = Мы срежем дорогу
We'll come shortly. = Мы быстренько

They looked at me sharp. = Они посмотрели мне прямо в глаза
They looked at me sharply. = Они посмотрели на меня пронзительно

It was sold dearly. = Это было продано в хорошие руки.

The film was deadly dull. = Фильм был (для меня) смертельно скучным.
